Altmark is the biggest  region over an area of the Federal land of Sachsen-Anhalt. It is in the north of the country and borders on such Federal lands as: Niedersachsen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg. Altmark has an area of 4.717 square kilometres with the population of 253 000 persons (for comparison: in capital of the Federal land with the area of 193 square kilometres live 258 000 inhabitants).

Altmark  is subdivided into two ground districts - ground district Saltzwedel (with an  area of 2 294 square kilometre with the population of 105 000 inhabitants) and ground district Stendal (with an area of 2 430 square kilometre and the population of 148 000 inhabitants) and it is basically considered as an agricultural region.

The most northern region of the land Sachsen-Anhalt with the population of 46 inhabitants on a one square kilometre with a district of Altmark Saltzwedel). Both district cities, as well as  Gardelegen and Tangermünde have an excellent transport-technical binding. Both districts desire  to create the frame conditions for investors. Along with economic development extends the infrastructure with the purpose of granting to investors the  attractive economic space.

Altmark also  offers numerous sights and natural areas, as, for example, Dromling and Colbitz-Letzlinger-Hayfield. Dromling is ranked as the greatest water-moorish grounds of Europe and is situated in southwest part of Altmark. It is possible to admire an unusual landscape with specific riches of variety.

Colbitz-Letzinger-Hayfield is situated in the south of Altmark. In the recent past this district was ranked as the biggest military range of Germany (Range for military technology tests in the Third Reich, range of a Red army). Today the Bundeswehr partially uses it sa an insignificant part of a hayfield for the military purposes, this range is regarded as one of modern ranges in the world.

In the East of Altmark proceeds the natural border of Elba. She creates around the   rest zones not only a fine atmosphere, but also is used as a water highway for an economy. Arendsee as  the deepest lake of the middle of Europe, is a popular and favorite place for bathing and excursions.
